South-eastern red tailed black cockatoo

Endangered

The south-eastern red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksia graptogyne) is restricted to a small area of south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia. It is an important totem species for local Aboriginal people.

The species has a highly specialised feeding habit, restricted to desert stringybark, brown stringybark and buloke. Tree hollows in large old and dead eucalyptus trees provide essential breeding habitat.

Major threats

  • 57% of all suitable habitat has been lost
  • Remaining habitat is under threat from continued land clearing, stock ringbarking and pine tree invasion
  • Fire in stringybark trees can inhibit food production for a decade

Key actions

  • Protect habitat from further losses
  • Revegetate food trees
  • Install nesting boxes to supplement the lack of tree hollows
  • Implement appropriate hazard reduction burning methods
